Get Your Sugar

Sugar Detail

After nearly 10 years living in the Mission, I was inspired to design a series of Calaveras, sugar skulls, popularized by the Dia de los Muertos celebration. I got a lot of positive response and more than a few requests for prints.

While lasers are cool for cats, they are not that impressive for printing, so I decided to get these letterpressed. After some research I decided on the Cranky Pressman in Salem, Ohio. Keith, the pressman, was awesome and faithfully entertained my print requests.

Unlike some of the printers who use plastic polymer plates, The Cranky Pressman works in metal. Sure it takes longer, but there's something nice about transforming digital into Magnesium. Because of their size, they were manually pressed on their classic Vandercook press with vegetable based ink.

The paper comes from Crane & Co., one of America's oldest paper manufacturers. How old? Paul Revere engraved banknotes for the Colony of Massachusetts Bay on Crane paper to help finance the American Revolution. The paper stock is Crane & Co.'s 100% cotton, Lettra line, made specifically for letterpress.

This is a limited edition, six designs, 50 prints per design. Each is 12 inches square. Mailed flat.

I'm slightly in love and want to get the Lego one tattooed on with my other sugar skull. Would you ship to the UK? It just pops a $2 flat rate on through the ol' Paypal.

Me too, let me know what the postage uplift is going to be to the UK.

Love these, bought Sugar vs Sugar. On looking through your blog's archives I see you made a Lovecraftian one, any reason why you didn't have that printed as well?

I too am wondering what the postage to the UK would be. Just let me know how much and I'll add it on to the total.

These are lovely prints! Do you do custom work? I would love, and would pay for, a portrait of myself and my wife, calaveras-style. Again, great work!

Jonathan Koshi said...

@My UK fans, I'm not sure what the shipping is going to be to the UK, but I'm fine to eat the cost unless it exceeds the price of the work.

These look great. Just ordered three to a UK address, let me know if you need any more for postage.

jkoshi :) shipping to UK will be about $20-30 from my experience of shipping quite a few prints that direction.

Hi, I just ordered one to UK as well. I will happily transfer extra for shipping, let me know!

SarahP said...

I'd love to purchase a print or two but need to ship international. Are you happy to ship to Australia? As with your UK fans above, more than happy to add extra at the check out to cover shipping (I'm guessing it will be pricey).

@International Fans, I've yet to see what these cost to ship, but will let you know if it gets too much for me to handle.

I've ordered Sugarcorn *love* - Let me know if you need more for postage to Australia.

liquidgoggles said...

aww, the pacman is sold out. do you have one left over. if so could you email me whyweigh at hotmail dot com.

and is it possible to order two different prints in the same order. it wont let me do that and I would like it all in 1 order instead of multiple shipments

It seems I was a little slow on the trigger for Lego my Sugar. Is there any chance that more of these exist, or of a reprint? Legos were a HUGE part of my childhood, and I would love to have one of these hanging on my wall.

Thanks for sharing these awesome prints!

Jonathan Koshi said...

Thank you all for the kind words. Sorry to those of you who missed it, but I do not have plans for a re-print right now.

To everyone who's ordered, since I have a day job, I will be working on getting these out as soon as I can, but please be patient as I am just a one-man show right now.

For the international orders, thank you all for your offers to pay the extra shipping. Once I figure out what it costs to ship to you, I will let you know!

Nooooo! I just saw these on OMGPosters and came over to grab Pacman and Alien... Add my vote for a reprint (re-press?). Anyone grab an extra? (Especially Pacman) battlecat22 at hotmail dot com.

Unknown said...

I have to have the Alien print. It's as simple as that. Genius. Please my good man, allow us a reprint.

Cheers!

I see there are lots of notes requesting reprint already, but wanted to let you know I am also all about a reprint. I would like to have one of each and the only one I am able to purchase is the unicorn. If you decide to reprint please let me know.

This is the coolest print/design project I've seen this year!!! I expect them to sell out right quick!

Would love the Lego one as my next tattoo. Hoping for a reprint or even more similar work would be wonderful!

I got my Alien print today! Though it was slightly mangled by the Postal Service (natch), it's still awesome. Thank you!

Your prints are amazing. So wish I had found them before they were gone.

I'd really like to purchase some prints too (if I can afford the price).

Amazing prints. I got mine in the mail today, but it had a 2 inch tear at the top (I blame both the UK and US postal system, not you). Amazing stuff, keep up the good work (and if shipping overseas, maybe reinforce it a bit more ;)

Michael Griffiths said...

I absolutely love my print, however it arrived with one corner torn. I was wondering if you took out insurance on the packages?

richard.purvis said...

Love these, heard about on current geek. awww all sold out. Are you reprinting?

Unknown said...

Mine are framed and ready to go up on my wall. http://twitpic.com/4bh4l2

Unknown said...

What kind of money would it take for you to reprint these? There is obviously a demand. I only mention money because it seems that people pleading with you hasn't garnered a response.

Jonathan Koshi said...

@Sedan, aww, thanks for the request but again, no reprint is in the plan for now. A new series, however, is. I'll be posting pieces as I get them done and will hopefully have everything together for another run soon. Please sign up on my email list to be notified of the next release. Cheers!

Unknown said...

Thanks for the response, although I'm disappointed that there is no reprint in the works I look forward to seeing your future projects, you have immense talent and I'm sure they will be amazing.

Hi Jonathan,

I love your work, absolutely brilliant and sad that I've only just discovered it.

Your Pacman Dia De Los Muertos design is something I'm very interested as a tattoo piece.

I wonder if you're any closer to doing re-run of these prints or if we could somehow negotiate for a higher-res image to provide to my tattoo artist?

I've subscribed to your mailing list for future updates.

Please keep up the awesome work.

Best regards,

MH

@Jim, thanks for the heads up on that! That is truly awful.

Absolutely fantastic! I really wish I would have stumbled upon these before they had sold out, especially the Pac-Man and Xenomorph prints. I was curious, if I could pay for a possible hi res picture of one or more in regards to getting a tattoo. That being said, I will totally understand your wanted to move forward from this project. Best wishes!
